Family Planning/ Adolescent Health.

14 Nov

It might interest you to know that family planning service is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent maternal, infant, and child mortality. It can reduce maternal mortality by reducing the number of unintended pregnancies, the number of abortions, and the proportion of births at high risk. Family planning offers a host of additional health, social, and economic benefits, it can help the slow of spread of HIV, promote gender quality, reduce poverty, accelerate socioeconomic development, and protect the environment.

As reported in NDHS 2013, the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) of Ondo state is 31.1%, modern (CPR) is 20.4%, fertility rate is 5.2births per woman, Maternal Mortality Rate 187/100,000 (HR CEMDOS) and unmet need of 16.9%.There are about 1,017,378 Women of childbearing age, 610 Primary Health Care facilities, 26 secondary health facilities out of which 510 provide family planning services.

Adolescent health and development are key foundations for a country’s economic development and political stability. The outcomes of adolescent health are closely linked with future adult development, infant and child mortality, maternal morbidity and mortality, and even long-term economic development.
Adolescents and youth in Nigeria face considerable challenges in terms of their health, education, employment and empowerment. Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable. In Ondo state, 11% of adolescent girls aged 15-19 years have had a live birth and 13.5% have begun childbearing in this age group.

Meeting the health care needs of adolescents and young people is paramount in the programme of the state in view of the fact that young people aged 10-24 make up more than a third of its population. This population is significant and therefore, their wellbeing is necessary to make meaningful progress in all sectors of the state.
